Drawing on memories of the British seaside, Tides unfolds within a brightly coloured world populated by recurring characters, sweets and symbols of consumption. Familiar references to leisure, pleasure and escape create an atmosphere that initially feels playful and inviting.

As the scene develops, an encroaching tide begins to shift the balance. What appears comforting and abundant gradually becomes unsettled, introducing feelings of excess, instability and uncertainty. The rising water acts as both a visual and psychological presence, disrupting the promise of carefree enjoyment.

Through its combination of attraction and discomfort, Tides reflects on environments shaped by pleasure, reward-seeking and sensory excess. Beneath its playful surface, the work considers the ways familiar comforts can become overwhelming, creating a space where enjoyment and unease coexist.

The rising water acts as both a visual and psychological presence, disrupting the promise of carefree enjoyment.
